Should I DIY My Website or Hire a Web Designer? The Soulpreneur Dilemma

If you’re here, I bet you’re pondering the idea of crafting your very own website for your spiritual business instead of reaching out for professional help. Whether you’re a seasoned spiritual entrepreneur or just starting out, the question that’s likely swirling in your mind is: “Is it worth paying someone to create my website?”

It’s not a question you can answer with a simple “yes” or “no.” Let’s be real… building a website isn’t exactly a bread and butter. But it’s not black magic either.

I’m here to shed some light on the DIY path and help you make an informed decision before you jump head-first into something new (Trust me, I’m ADHD- jumping head-first into new stuff and building a plane while it flies is all I ever do :D).

I still remember the first website I’ve ever designed.

It was an equestrian Wikipedia that I built in pure HTML over two decades ago when I was just 12 years old. As you can imagine, it wasn’t a masterpiece, but I loved the experience and was totally proud of myself. That’s how I got hooked on web design. In my career as a web designer, I tried pure HTML, dabbled with Bootstrap, created some blogs on Blogger, built a website for my former insurance company on Joomla, played around with Wix, and worked with WordPress + Divi.

Eventually, I realized that WordPress was adding to my clients’ frustrations, and it made me wonder if there was something easier to manage for the clients that offered the same possibilities for growth.

Oh, and I can’t forget my ultimate love affair with Showit. Yes, it’s been quite the adventure!

I must say, fake modesty aside, that I’m just pretty damn good at reverse engineering, I learn pretty fast, and I do these things intuitively (perks of being a 2/4).

But I realize that most people aren’t.

I won’t sugarcoat it—designing your own website comes with its fair share of challenges.

Nowadays, with so many modern tools at your disposal, creating a website that’s both stylish and functional is easier than ever. You’ll find an abundance of resources to guide you through the process. It’s all about determination, patience, and a dash of creativity. And time—a lot of it. Not everyone’s cut out for the task, and let’s face it, it can be a lot to handle. So, how do you know if the DIY route is your best move?

DIY Your Business Website: Yay or Nay?

Building your own website is in alignment with you if…

  • You’re just starting out, testing the waters with your business concept. Crafting a simple yet stylish DIY website can help you gauge interest without breaking the bank.
  • You’re on a tight budget. If you’re still in the early stages and cash isn’t flowing yet, building your own site can save you a bundle.
  • You don’t need any advanced functionalities or unique aesthetics. Setting up a basic website with simple functionalities is no rocket science. If your website’s needs are relatively straightforward, you can DIY your way to a functional online presence.
  • You’re comfortable with tech and don’t get easily discouraged by a steep learning curve. You don’t need to be a tech whiz, but a curious and patient spirit will serve you well.
  • You have all the time in the world. If your schedule isn’t jam-packed and you’re willing to invest the hours, DIYing can be an awesome choice.
  • You’re a generator or a manifesting generator, and you’re up for the challenge. Your energy can fuel this adventure.

However, if these reasons aren’t ringing your bell, it might be time to consider hiring a pro.

Hiring a Website Wizard is your best bet if…

  • Money isn’t a major roadblock. A custom-designed website typically costs $2500 – $7000, depending on how complex your business is, and whether you want to sell things online. If you have the budget, investing in a custom-designed website can pay off in the long run.
  • Your DIY attempts make you pull your hair out. If days (or weeks!) of tinkering have you spinning your wheels, professionals might be the answer.
  • Perfectionism is your middle name. If “good enough” doesn’t cut it for you and you’re set on pixel-perfect results, professional help is wise. See, most website creation tools have a lot of restrictions in place, which can make it difficult to get everything looking exactly how you want it. If you’re the type of person who needs things to be just so, you might need some help from a designer.
  • Tech isn’t your strong suit. If you have no idea what is responsive design, or if you struggle every time you get a new smartphone – don’t bother taking the DIY path, it’s time to delegate.
  • You’re fully booked with clients. Time is a precious commodity, especially when you’re serving clients or working on attracting new ones. It’s better to stick to your zone of genius instead of wasting your time on countless YouTube tutorials.
  • You’re looking for something truly unique. A pre-made template won’t always cut it if you’re aiming for a one-of-a-kind digital presence.
  • You’re a Projector, and your plate’s already full. Adding a time-intensive project to the mix isn’t your jam.

But wait, there’s a third way!

If building your own website from scratch seems daunting, but you don’t have the budget to hire a pro, I recommend you skip WordPress. Saving those few bucks on monthly subscription is not worth the frustration.
